Adventures in Southeast: Episode 1

So Ali and I had a sort of date slash adventure night on saturday. Our first idea was to stop in at Pok Pok (and Whiskey Soda Lounge) for dinner (apparently they're infamous for a leg of hen - yeah, remember I said adventure), but the wait was a little beyond what our hungry stomachs could handle, so we walked back towards home and tried a place closer to us that we had been eye-ing, called Nuestra Cucina, an upscale mexican restaurant. It was TO. DIE. FOR. Really. I had a steak, and I rarely eat meat, and holy macerole it was worth the splurge. A virgin margarita, some rockfish ceviche, and gratuitous picture taking and cute chef oggling concluded with us almost falling asleep to an Iraq documentary. We live a riveting life, I know. But it was a jolly night, with lots of walking, a 'lets get cute' attitude, and who can ever get tired of mexican food? NOT US.

It is official! Ali is here!

So, as I have mentioned before, Ali moved in last weekend and oh boy is it fun :) We both now have live in fashion consultants, eating right and excercising motivators, and someone to obsess over new bands/artists with, most well put in the following quote

Ali: what are you doing tuesday night?
Me: nothing, why?
Ali: ok good, cause its major jason mraz listening time for us!
Me: roomate bonding YES

So the next couple of months will be filled with early morning "do you want the shower first" politeness, cause we're just those kind of nice people :) and walking buddies, and restaurant trying-out buddies, and all sorts of fun things. It's a nice way to round out the college and life in portland experience, with an awesome roomate who will always be a life long friend :)

After:

And have I mentioned how much fun it is to abbreviate everything!? Yeah, I'm learning a lot from Ali, she has infinite wisdom :)

5 days of Hell

Status Thursday Morning: Culprit Exonerated: Apparently everyone has those bumps. Sarah showed me hers. So I'm back to square one. And she ruled out tonsils with her infinite nursing wisdom. What the hell?

Updation: the culprit has been identified. If you are skeemish, then don't continue reading. But yes, the weirdo feeling has been figured to be some interesting bumps on the base of my tongue. They don't hurt and aren't inflamed or anything, they're just there. And making it uncomfortable and a little bit hard to swallow. So to the doctor I go. Crap.

Ok, you know that feeling where you think you have a popcorn kernel piece stuck in the back of your throat? That little ‘skin’ of the popcorn kernel that just wont go down so it’ chilling back there tickling you and taking its sweet time to be swallowed down? Yeah, I have that feeling but it’s not actually a popcorn kernel, or any other discernable piece of food or gum, and I’ve had it since Friday. I am going certifiably insane. I have no idea what’s going on. I could go on and on about the many explanations I have come up with so far, only some being hypochondriac-inspired, but I wont gross you out, and I’d really rather let a doctor check it out. So that’s the plan. But until then, if you see me habitually swallowing or making weird coughing noises, please forgive me, and send me some sympathetic and knowing smiles. Fuck me.

The following program is brought to you b "C"

A 'simply for fun' list of Going Ons in my life

Copious amounts of water - I am back on track with working out and eating well and drinking tons of Water and DAMNIT does it feel good! Yes its slightly harder to get out of bed in the morning because of the lifting I did in my living the night before with Karen's ancient dumbells probably from 1989. But hey, they were in the closet and I havent signed up for the gym yet in the new hood. And the only thing on was Survivor, and I'll take what I can get when it comes to random but productive motivation tactics, those stupid tan skinny bitches. Hmm how does one make an audition tape?

Cards - and by that I mean graduation cards, mothers day cards, "see you next year" cards, lots of them. At work. At home. I'm tired of being asked to sign them. It's kind of awkward. It makes me want to hide under a rock. I never say the right thing. Don't you already know I love you?!

Camera phone - I love it. I could take pictures all day. Of random things. Of silly establishments in southeast. Which is a combination of hipster bars, indie shops and grocery stores, and kind of run down skeezy bars. Current photographed favorites = Reel M'Inn Tavern. Ho's Automotive services. "Do It Best All Across America" hardware store. Niiiiiice. Yes, I am immature. Well aware.

Criminal Background Check - Getting fingerprinting immediately makes you nervous. Like really nervous. They even take you in a back room. And of course they use that nasty ink. But the cop was funny, and just a slight bit flirty. Not too bad for a first encounter with the PoPo. Especially in NoPo. Oh man. I crack myself up. :) Anyways, its for South Africa. And it makes that whole upcoming experience even more real. It's HAPPENING.

Cream - for my coffee. It's my one saving grace. It gets me through the day. People have no idea. I could rub it all over my body. Its that good. And a little goes a long way, which is perfect for my new "get ready for vegas" type diet/regime. And I'm not opposed to the Irish variety either. :)

Childlike Competition - specifically between politicians. Seems contrary to them spouting that they have such a long history of "getting things done". Really? How do you possible have time to get things done, with all the freaking whining?! Cause you know...if you go back on your word, that would make you a liar. And no one likes a liar. Oh wait, nevermind, apparently thats a qualifying character atribute for American politics. So...sorry I bothered you, please continue.

Crying - literally all the time. For two days. Anytime I think of anything remotely sad, or even remotely happy, its like the grand cooley damn opens up. (ps: have you seen that lightshow on that damn? its pretty freaking cool, just a heads up, cause I'm cool like that). The hallmark commercials. Talking to Kathleen the other day, not gonna lie, a little teary. Even the insipirational Kaiser Permanente ads. Jesus. Not sure whats going on with all that. And no it's not PMS. I think I'm just getting old.

Vegas Baby!

Ok, so I was going to blab on and on about how excited I am for our 4th of July Vegas Trip Extravaganza (and by "our" of course I mean mine, Laurens, and Tricia's amazing idea over coffee in february that came into reality just a few minutes ago - after my belated last-link-of-the-officalness-of-it-all plane ticket purchase)..buutttt Lauren beat me to it. Her email completely summed up a) how cool we are b) how utterly excited we all are for adventure c) how drinking-ed out and tan we will be at the end of our trip and once again d) how fantasticly awesome we are. Because come on, It can't be over-emphasized. So, here is her email. In all its glory.

Ok vegas stuff:
So here is what I know, Fremont (where our hotel is closest to is an awesomely tacky old school vegas area where drinks are cheaper and less watered down than on the strip. Also - If we want to drink in the pool/get the most for our money we should stalk up at the liquor store on thursday when we get into town. What do people like? I call vodka tonic. Also easily transported in a water bottle down to the pool. :) And of course a bottle of southern comfort to let the goodtimes roll. And maybe some jack daniels and diet coke?and maybe some champaign because um... its always a celebration wherever lauren is? ok its only like 4 days but its also the 4th of july and I plan on being down at the pool in full bakini zone by 9am most days cuz its gonna be a skorcher and i want layyyy around and go through the SHARK TANK OF MARVELS. I also... even though it kinda makes me want to pee just to think about it .... kind of really really want to go on that crazy roller coaster on top of that one building. it might be expensive but YAY. and i dont know about you - but im having a cocktail or two on the plane ride there so bring on your PARTY FACES LADIES cuz ... its gonna be an awesomely hilarious sequenced shot induced helluvah good time. :)

love,
me (Lauren)
ps. bring. on. the. cleavage. And tan lines

And in true Vegas fashion, in celebratory cliche-ness and our 'why the hell not' travel reputation (laurens trip to paris this summer, our recent trip to disneyland, tricia's awesome jetsetting college years), we are getting tattoos. Yeah. That's right. :)
